When to go
- Spring and autumn: usually the most pleasant time across the country.
- Summer: very hot inland, milder on the Atlantic coast.
- Winter: mild days in the South, cold nights; snow is possible in the Atlas.
Money & budget
- The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD).
- ATMs are common in cities, rarer in rural areas.
- Tipping is appreciated in restaurants and for small services.
Culture & customs
- Clothing that covers shoulders and knees is appreciated away from the beach.
- Always ask before photographing someone.
- During Ramadan, avoid eating or drinking in public during the day.
Bargaining in the souks
Bargaining is part of the culture. Keep smiling, set yourself a maximum price and compare. If the price does not suit you, a polite “thank you” is enough.
Health
- Prefer bottled water.
- Sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water, especially in the desert.
- Take out travel insurance that covers medical costs.
Formalities & practicalities
- Entry requirements depend on your nationality: check them with the relevant authorities before you travel.
- Official languages: Arabic and Amazigh; French is widely spoken.
- Electricity: 220 V, type C and E sockets.

Is Morocco a safe destination?
Morocco welcomes a great many visitors every year. As anywhere, stay alert in crowded places, keep an eye on your belongings and use official guides. Check your foreign ministry’s travel advice before you go.
Do I need a guide to visit a medina?
It is not compulsory, but an official guide is valuable in Fez or Marrakesh to understand the history and find your way. Politely decline offers from unofficial guides in the street.
Can I pay by card?
Yes, in many hotels, restaurants and modern shops. In the souks, small restaurants and taxis, cash is still the norm.
Which SIM card should I get?
Moroccan operators sell prepaid SIM cards with data, available at airports and in shops. You may be asked for ID.
How many days for a first trip?
